Useful Ayurvedic Tips On Hydration: Right Way To Drink Water

Water is the expression of awareness, according to Vasant Lad's book The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies. Water is considered as a fluid, thick, heavy, soft, fierce, cold, and cohesive substance that is responsible for bringing molecules together. Water is a universal chemical solvent since it is chemical energy. Plasma, cytoplasm, serum, saliva, nasal discharge, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, and perspiration are all made up of water. It is thus required for the absorption of nutrients and the maintenance of life; without it, our cells would perish. Considering how crucial water is to human existence, here are some significant Ayurvedic water drinking tips.

  1. Start your day with drinking water: Ayurveda recommended that starting your day by drinking water is a healthful practice known as Ushapan. It helps in the treatment of a variety of illnesses and promotes the removal of toxins from the body, and cleanses the intestines.

  2. Use Silver and Copper Vessels to Store Drinking Water: Ayurveda always recommended drinking water that is preserved in copper (Tamba) and silver (chaandi) pots as it positively charges the water held in these vessels and has the power to balance the three doshas in the body. Researchers agree, noting that copper has several antioxidants and antibacterial qualities that help in the body's immune system's improvement. It has anti-cancer potential as well. The water in the silver vessel has the ability to eliminate free radicals from the body, as well as provide a cooling effect in the intestines and help indigestion.

  3. Know the Signs Your Body Sends You When It's Thirsty: Your body sends you signals when it needs water. You need to keep an eye on these signals as they may indicate a health concern. Such as,  one is the color of urine; dark yellow pee indicates dehydration, whereas clear, straw-colored urine indicates a hydrated and satisfied body. One of the signs of a dehydrated body is chapped dry lips. Keep an eye out for these signs since they might indicate a health concern.

  4. Warm water is even better than room temperature water: Ice-cold water disrupts digestion and extinguishes the flames. Constipation is exacerbated by cold water, which reduces blood circulation to various organs of the body. Drinking tepid water can aid healthy digestion and metabolism, resulting in weight reduction, bloating relief, and pain relief. Warm water helps to manage cholesterol levels while also keeping the arteries clean.

  5. Avoid gulping down huge amounts of water in a single breath; instead, take little sips, swallow, breathe, and repeat throughout the day. This holds even when you're eating. "There are three doshas in the body - Vata, pitta, and Kapha," says an Ayurvedic expert, "and how you eat water must be in line with these doshas." Only drink water one hour after having a meal if you have Vata Prakruti. This will help in the digestion of their diet. People with pitta prakruti should take small sips of water during meals to jumpstart their digestion, while those with Kapha prakruti can drink water before meals to feel full and not overeat.

According to Ayurveda, it is recommended always to sit down to drink water.

But why?

Know the reasons below!

Should You Drink Water While Standing Or When Sitting?

While there is no scientific proof to prove which of the two theories is correct, it is undeniably true that standing up and drinking water can cause arthritis and other ailments. However, it is still suggested that you sit down and drink water, as posture might affect how our bodies process the food we give them. Blood flow is strong towards our hands and legs while we stand or walk, which might make it difficult for water to enter the digestive system adequately.

Therefore, it is preferable to sit and sip water instead of standing. Standing and drinking upsets the body's fluid balance, increasing fluid collection in the joints producing arthritis. Sitting and drinking relax your muscles and nervous system, making it easier for your nerves to digest meals and other fluids. While sitting, your kidneys also speed up the filtering process.

As we have come across useful tips and the correct posture, let us know about the correct method of intaking water.

Taking a big gulp of water vs. sipping it one at a time

Our elders frequently teach us that gulping water from a bottle is not the proper way to drink water and that instead, we should take a glass of water and sip it slowly. This is possibly right, and it is a suggestion that we should follow.

When drinking water from a bottle, you usually just drink enough to quench your thirst for the time being. However, when you drink water from a glass, you are more likely to complete the water in the glass, allowing you to drink more water.

It's also not a good idea to drink water from a bottle because it might make you feel bloated. When you drink water from a glass, sip by sip, your body remains hydrated, and you don't feel any pain.

Therefore, Sitting down with a glass of water and sipping it sip by sip is the proper method to consume water. A person should drink at least 2-3 liters of water every day. It is preferable to drink room temperature water rather than really cold water.
