Why GRE?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a globally recognised standardised test used for admissions into graduate and business schools, particularly in the United States, Canada, and many other countries. Conducted by ETS (Educational Testing Service), the GRE assesses a test-taker’s readiness for graduate-level academic work through a comprehensive evaluation of verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills.

Accepted by thousands of universities worldwide, including Ivy League schools and top business programs, the GRE serves as a vital gateway for aspirants aiming for higher studies, scholarships, and research fellowships abroad.

GRE General Test

The most widely taken test, the GRE General Test evaluates the overall academic aptitude of applicants. It is accepted across disciplines including engineering, social sciences, arts, and business programs. This test includes sections on Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing.

GRE Subject Test

Designed for students applying to specialised graduate programs, this test measures knowledge in specific areas such as Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, and Chemistry. Some institutions require this test to assess the subject-specific aptitude of candidates.

Test Formats

Computer-Based Test
(CBT)

The preferred mode in most countries, where candidates appear for the test using a computer at an authorised testing centre. Results are usually available within 10–15 days.

Paper-Based Test
(PBT)

Offered in regions where computer-based testing is not available. This format is identical in structure and scoring, although fewer test dates are offered.

Structure of the GRE General Test

The GRE General Test comprises three core sections with time limits and specific focus areas: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Unscored and Research Sections

Analytical Writing

Duration: 60 minutes Two tasks are assigned—“Analyse an Issue” and “Analyse an Argument.” This section measures the candidate’s ability to express complex ideas clearly, support ideas with logical reasoning, and maintain coherence in writing.

Verbal Reasoning

Duration: 60 minutes (2 sections of 30 minutes each) This section includes reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence questions. It tests vocabulary in context, critical reading, and the ability to evaluate written material.

Quantitative Reasoning

Duration: 70 minutes (2 sections of 35 minutes each) Topics covered include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data interpretation. This section evaluates problem-solving skills and the understanding of quantitative concepts.

Unscored and Research Sections

Some GRE include unscored or research sections for ETS research purposes. These sections do not affect your score but must be attempted as part of the test.

Understanding GRE Scoring

  • Verbal and Quantitative Sections: Scored on a scale of 130 to 170 in 1-point increments.
  • Analytical Writing: Scored on a scale of 0 to 6 in half-point increments.
  • Subject Test Scores: Scaled from 200 to 990 (depending on the subject).

  • Top graduate schools generally look for scores above 160 in Verbal and Quantitative and 4.5 or above in Writing. However, scoring expectations vary based on discipline and institution.
